Project Summary

ECS is delighted to have been appointed commissioning specialists for the Emerald Stadium Headingley. Working in partnership with G&H Group to ensure that the balancing and commissioning of all relevant M&E systems were fully compliant to the appropriate BSRIA /CIBSE
codes and the project design intent.

The redevelopment of the iconic Emerald Headingley Stadium has returned the venue to its former glory as a world-class international sports arena. The £45 million project was a joint venture between Yorkshire County Cricket Club and rugby league side Leeds Rhinos.
ECS provided full HVAC testing and commissioning of both primary and secondary ventilation, domestic hot water services and low pressure hot water, along with our pre-commencement commissionability service to minimise any future short comings/problems.

How it happened

The scheme started in the winter of 2017/18 with the demolition of the famous rugby south stand and the 90-year-old combined rugby north and cricket south stand. ECS focused initially on the new 7,700 capacity Tetley’s South Stand working to stringent non-negotiable deadlines to guarantee a completion date in advance of Boxing Day 2018 in preparation for the Leeds Rhinos’ match against Wakefield Wildcats.

M&E services were installed across both stands in all spectator facing parts, banqueting/ corporate suites including the Emerald Suite in addition to the undercarriages of both stands where the public refreshment areas and staff/player facilities are located.

The combined rugby north stand and cricket south stand now has 4,200 seats to view cricket matches and 3,800 rugby facing seats. Again tight deadlines dictated a snag/issue free commissioning period to ensure completion for the forth coming Cricket World Cup 2019.

The site was incredibly busy throughout with both rugby codes, Leeds Rhinos and Yorkshire Carnegie, playing and training on the pitch and Yorkshire County Cricket Club hosting domestic fixtures as well as two internationals.

The third aspect of the project saw the old cricket pavilion progressively refurbished. It now houses a fully operational plant room serving hot and cold water and low pressure hot water heating. The pavilion is also home to the new Directors Suite, Boardroom and Taverns Suite with a new accompanying catering kitchen. ECS again provided our full HVAC testing and commissioning service, including proportional balance of all primary and secondary ventilation, domestic hot water services and low pressure hot water heating.
